Tenley Cowl

Tenley is part of the Knitty Professors Winter 2009/2010 Collection.

  DSC_0026

Knit seamlessly from the top-down, Tenley is a flattering, fitted cowl-neck sweater. Shown in Malabrigo Merino Worsted (Colorway: Orchid), this sweater would work in any worsted weight yarn, such as Paton’s Classic Merino. Cascade 220, or Brown Sheep Lamb’s Pride Worsted.

Tenley is inspired by Tenley Albright, the first female American figure skater to win a gold medal in the Olympic Games. Though never a professional skater, she entered and won the 1956 Olympic Games. What we love about Tenley was that she didn't stop there—she went on to study medicine, graduating from Harvard Medical School in 1961. She then became a surgeon.

The center medallion cable motif on this sweater reflects Tenley Albright's Olympic success. The twisted cables on either side evoke the caduceus, the familiar symbol of the medical profession.

Tenley is designed to flatter a woman’s figure. The cable and rib motif slims your waist, while optional hip increases provide an hourglass shape.

We hope you'll find Tenley a very wearable sweater. The slouchy cowl neck makes it a great pick for cold days, but the cable and rib pattern throughout the body still gives you a flattering, shapely silhouette. Tenley is perfect for watching a figure skating show at the arena, or just for taking a walk on a crisp winter day.

Tenley is available individually for $6.00

Pattern: Nimbostratus Lace Shawl

[updated 14 Mar. 10]

Nimbostratus is a reversible lace shawl or scarf worked on the bias using a variety of easy-to-memorize stitches. This is a great first lace project.

The pattern is available for purchase for $6.

It is also available as part of our Winter 2009-2010 Pattern Collection.

A nimbostratus is a cloud common to the tropics, that brings rain. It is a low, even-textured cloud, usually gray, with layers stacked upon one another.

It's hypnotic evenness evokes the rhythmic pattern of this shawl, with its rows of faggoting on the bias and double yarn-over "stripes" bordered by garter stitch.

Nimbostratus is knit on the bias using Victorian lace fagotting stitch and some larger double-yarn-overs for the stripes of holes. This pattern looks the same on both sides (it is reversible), which is important to me for shawls, and is very VERY easy to memorize.

If you are a new lace knitter, this pattern is a cinch. Once you get the hang of the increases and decreases to create the bias, you can put those charts away.

You will need approximately 500 yards of a fingering or sport weight yarn, ideally a fluffy mohair or a lace-weight yarn held doubled. The blue yarn pictured is a handspun.

You can also make this wider if you want, and use even more yarn. It's up to you!

Nimbostratus can be purchased individually for $6.

(Or it can be purchased as part of our Winter 2009-2010 Pattern Collection.)

Alwyn

Alwyn is part of the Knitty Professors Winter 2009-2010 Collection.

Alwyn Green Chair

Sized for babies from newborn to 18 months, Alwyn is a one-piece jumpsuit knit seamlessly from the top down. To accommodate wiggly babies (and diaper changes), it features buttons at the neck and a zippered right leg.

This wintry jumpsuit was inspired by Wilson Alwyn Bentley, the first known photographer of snowflakes. Bentley photographed over 5000 snowflakes, which he referred to as “tiny miracles of beauty” through a special process he developed. Because the snowflakes melted quickly, Bentley developed a process to capture microscopic images mounted on black velvet to show off their intricate designs.

SnowflakesWilsonBentley

The Fair Isle pattern reflects Bentley's carefully preserved snowflakes. Shown here in ruby red, it would also look lovely in blue, dark green, or even black. Alwyn makes a perfect holiday outfit for your baby girl or boy.

Alwyn Held

Yarn: Naturally Caron Country (light worsted weight), or any DK/light worsted yarn.

Pattern: Liliane Sweater Coat

[updated 13 Mar. 10]

Liliane is part of our Winter 2009-2010 Pattern Collection.

Liliane is inspired by the life and adventures of mountain climber Liliane Barrard. She and two other women were the first women to summit K2 on an expedition in 1986. Liliane died during the descent, but her heroic explorations resonate for women adventurers still.

[L.B. is in white]

This sweater coat is made of a cozy alpaca yarn and will keep urban mountaineers very warm this winter.

  • Shown: Berroco Ultra Alpaca, color #6276 Brown Heather. 100 grams/215 yards per skein. 6/7/8 skeins.
  • Three sizes: XS/S, M/L, XL/XXL. Size M/L shown.
  • Finished Bust Measurements: 38/44/50 inches. It's a jacket; it's supposed to be full fitting.

You can purchase Liliane for $6.00 individually, or as part of the Winter Collection.

Pattern: Vera Rubin Cardigan

[Revised 26 March 2010]

Vera Rubin is available as a PDF download for $6. Click the button for an automatic PDF download.

Vera Rubin can also be purchased as part of our Winter 2009-2010 Pattern Collection.

Vera Rubin (b. 1928) is an astronomer who uncovered a phenomenon known as the “galaxy rotation problem”—a discrepancy between the predicted and observed motion of galaxies. Her observations showed that the rotation of galaxies didn't match the perceived amount of matter in a galaxy—stars, planets, dust—and supported the theory of what we now call “dark matter.”

To show her findings, Vera drew galaxy rotation curves, which inspires the “orbit ridge” stitch pattern and the circular, top-down design of this sweater.

Vera Rubin is worked top-down in one piece with minimal seaming. Available is a wide variety of sizes, from XS to XXXL. Shown in Malabrigo Merino Worsted (blue) and Cascade Venezia (coral) but would also be great in good ol' Cascade 220. Knit on size 7 needles at a gauge of 5 sts per inch in stockinette stitch.

The orbit ridge detail is worked at the neckline, sleeve cuffs, and bottom hem.

Vera Rubin can be purchased individually for $6.00.
